There’s two kinds of music I gravitate towards during the coldest, darkest months—and this one is particularly cold and dark.

In January I’m either looking for music that captures the cold ambiance with minimal, sometimes dissonant and dark sounds—something to watch snowfall while the soft and low set winter sun shines through the window.

Other times I want something that juxtaposes what’s going on outside—sunny, tropical, sugary sweet and happy. Anything that brings memories of warm beach days and hot summer nights.

So that’s kind of what I was going for when I dove into curating January’s collection of new releases from LANDR Distribution artists.

Here’s some of the gold I found in the crate.

TsemgJuve – “BadMood”

Falling firmly into the beach nostalgia category is BadMood from TsemgJuve.

I wish I knew how to pronounce the artist’s name, but that doesn’t take away this excellent neo-R&B and trap effort.

Simple but punchy beat production, tasteful bars and catchy vocals with just the right amount of autotune.

Looking at TsemgJuve’s Instagram TSEMG stands for Triple Sense Entertainment Music Group, so that might be a good place to keep tabs with this new artist.

munnrai – “Phase”

Here’s a nice one to watch snowfall on a quiet and sunny Saturday afternoon—Phase from munnrai’s new release Humanity is an excellent dive into the experimental side of electronic music.

The Tokyo based artist’s Instagram is chock full of Eurorack synth gear, so it’s safe to assume that some insane patches were used to craft this pensive album.

I’m a huge sucker for Eurorack synths and the incredible sounds they can produce, so I enjoyed listening to this album quite a bit.

Lfome – “Whitewood”

Here’s another interesting electronic music pick from Lfome’s new single release.

I enjoyed the B side title “Whitewood” for its shape-shifting synth pads, heavy synth bass, ear-catching vocals and dancy percussion.

It’s a really nice ambient house track that could accompany you while you clean the house or zone in on your workday.

I wasn’t able to find much about the artist, except their Bandcamp page which indicates the project is based in Frankfurt.

“Slide” is the newest release from up-and-coming rapper YXUNGTAARZAN.

The track definitely fits into the emo-rap canon, featuring rapped verses and heartfelt singing over the chorus.

The catchy tune is a great addition to the UK based rapper’s growing discography.

For fans of Lil Uzi Vert, Juice WRLD

Morning Haiku – “Equinox”

This impressive track from Morning Haiku stood out to me because it reminded me of Bon Iver’s 2016 album 22, A Million.

In “Equinox”, Morning Haiku sings over some low-key synths and acoustic guitars arrangement to deliver some emotional vocals.

The production of the track is what made it so exciting for me, I really enjoyed hearing how Morning Haiku used autotune to add a creative touch to their vocals.

For fans of Bon Iver, Frank Ocean
