Independent duo defy conventional moulds of music making and find new ways of creating. We chat with Prince Innocence to see what works and what doesn’t.
Who is Prince Innocence?
Prince Innocence is Josh McIntyre and Talvi Faustmann. We are both from Toronto. We originally met in high school but didn’t start collaborating on music until much later.
Tell me about your writing and recording process: Is it collaborative? Who does what?
Our recording process involves a lot of sending files back and forth even though we live together. When we first started making music together Talvi was living in Montreal going to McGill and I was living in Toronto. I would email beats, drum loops and sometimes full instrumentals. We rarely work in the same room together which gives us freedom to experiment alone. It also creates suspense as we wait to hear what the other has done.
You used our mastering for your latest single I Don’t Care, can you tell me a bit about the production of that song?
We recorded I Don’t Care during a really infuriating time spent with a label that we thankfully didn’t sign with. We were in a professional studio working on other songs that we hated and ended up recording this at home. As for the actual production we used Logic Pro X and some plug ins. Im not really a big gear guy but I have a bunch of instruments I’ve amassed over the years.
For me its always ‘less is more’. I usually work best with my laptop and a midi controller. When I have too many options I get carried away. After we recorded it we brought it to our friend Cam Findlay’s (Kontravoid, VOTIIV) studio for some additional mixing before running it through LANDR. I Don’t Care is the first single from our upcoming EP in 2015.
I saw that Gorilla Vs Bear picked it up for their Best Songs of 2014, you are amongst some great company. Do you consider yourselves part of that scene? I am thinking about Blue Hawaii, FKA Twigs, PC Music…
We don’t really consider ourselves a part of any scene to be honest. We are always open to playing with bands from any genre, whether we fit into a similar sound or not.
Do you record from home? What’s your setup?
We record all of our music from home but we don’t have a constant studio set up. Our apartment is littered with gear. We’ve ended up recording in most rooms in our apt. Right now we turned our living room into a photo studio so all of our stuff is scattered. Heres a photo of some stuff that was in the living room/photo studio(?)
Thanks for chatting, what are you guys listening to at the moment?
Josh – Father & Key! – Tell You No (2014)
Talvi – Caetano Veloso – Clarice (1968)
