Meet the label and party promoting outfit from Glasgow championing quality underground electronic music from around the world, and across the ages.
We’re big fans of Boiler Room‘s Upfront series, and got kinda obsessed with Upfront 010 from Huntleys + Palmers.
The Glasgow-based label and promoter curated a moody house and no-wave inspired jams mix that feels like the perfect soundtrack to Montreal’s never-ending deep winter freeze. Then we learned H+P used LANDR to master it.
We caught up with the man in charge of H+P, Andrew Thomson, to find out what they’re all about.
Huntleys + Palmers have built their reputation for quality in all the right places:
“For the past 7 years, we’ve been championing quality underground electronic music from around the world and across the ages.”
After killing it for 5 years at their Plastic People (RIP) residency in London, H+P are back in their hometown:
“We’re programming events for UK institution Nice N Sleazy, which has been operating in Glasgow for over 20 years.
Our first programme includes a bunch of local talent such as David Barbarossa, Fergus Clark and General Ludd, plus travelling guests including the likes of Anika from Stones Throw, DJ Nigga Fox and Nummer.
We’re also doing a few larger events at the city’s Art School – including the likes of James Holden.”
BIG THINGS POPPIN’
Huntleys + Palmers and their vinyl-only label Highlife have seen some serious momentum in the past year.
Highlife is a collaborative project with underground afro-futurist hero Auntie Flo (the hand behind LANDR Podcast 003) exploring the depths of sound from South America, South Africa, the Middle East, Caribbean and India.
Building upon the success of releases from artists like Esa, Alma Negra and Auntie Flow, Andrew tells us that “2015 will see [the label] maintaining continuity with follow-up releases, a compilation, new debuts, an artist album and more.”
MASTERING THE MIX
The H+P Boiler Room mix is unreal, logging repeat plays for days around our office.
“I’ve been aware of LANDR for quite a while. Our work shares a lot of common ground with the excellent Multi Culti label and the man behind that, Mr Von Party, has been flying the flag for LANDR.”
Releasing mixes is part and parcel of running a label. You need to release them often, but you don’t want to abandon the need for quality sound in the process.
“It’s important to make tracks and mixes sound as best as they possibly can.
I’ve absolutely no idea what happened with the process of mastering the Boiler Room mix, but it does sounds much better after having went through LANDR and it’s something that I’d use again.”
